What to Look out for When Deciding on Diamond Router Bits

When looking for cutting tools that are necessary for defining profiles or polishing hard surfaces, such as granite-concrete objects, a diamond router bit should be the first method that comes to mind. These cutting tools are comprised of diamond grains fixed onto the functional areas of the tool.

 

 

 

When considering your options surrounding router bits, it is always important that you stay on top of the factors posing the largest impacts on the quality of your purchase.

Router Bit Shanks

 

First on the list - pay close attention to the size requirements of your router bit shanks before diving in. Router bit shanks can be identified as the solid, cylindrical part of the bit that fit into the collet of the tool.

 

Diamond router bit shanks can typically be acquired in a couple of sizes - ½” and ¼”. If you haven’t developed an eye for establishing the quality of diamond router bits from experienced visual acuity then, luckily, there are some clear cut signs that can aid in the selection process.

 

When selecting a high-quality bit you will want to ensure they are fitted with a carbide cutter that has a fine enough edge for your cutting needs, while also being thick enough for numerous sharpenings. Your carbide tip should be robust enough to be reground up to 15 times.

 

Buyers beware – the braze, responsible for securing the carbide to the body of the bit, should exhibit no unnecessary interstices; this can create an extremely dangerous environment to work in due to being more susceptible to failure, especially at higher speeds.

 

Lastly, look for bits incorporating anti-kickback design philosophies whenever possible. These router bits cleverly mitigate kickback occurrence by increasing mass so that the bit is less prone to biting and catching the material.
